Bhutan is a 45-minute drive from our gate. Here is how a border day-trip works — documents, timing, food and the rules to check before you go.
The drive
From Chilapata, the road to Jaigaon runs through Hasimara and tea estates — about 26 km, 45 minutes to an hour. The Indian side (Jaigaon) is a busy border bazaar; cross the gate and Phuentsholing is immediately calmer: wider roads, tidy shops, the distinctive Bhutanese architecture.
Documents and rules — check before you go
Border rules change with little notice, and Indian citizens currently need original photo ID (voter ID or passport; Aadhaar rules have varied) to enter Phuentsholing’s border zone, with deeper travel into Bhutan requiring permits from the immigration office. Foreign nationals face different requirements entirely.
The safe routine: tell us the night before, we check the current rules with drivers who cross weekly, and you carry originals for everyone — including children. No ID photocopies, no exceptions.
- Carry: original voter ID or passport for each traveller
- Check with us: current entry rules, office hours, permit requirements
- Leave early: mornings are cooler and border queues shorter
What to do with half a day
You do not need a plan bigger than this: walk the gate, have lunch (Bhutanese Ema Datshi if you like heat, or the excellent momos), buy cheese, apples and postcards, take photos at the Zangto Pelri Lhakhang temple nearby, and be back before dark. The Karbandi monastery viewpoint above town is worth the climb if time allows.
Budget: a car for the half-day runs ₹2,000–2,500. Lunch for two in Phuentsholing, ₹500–800.
Honest advice
A border day-trip is a fun addition to a Dooars holiday — not a Bhutan experience. If Bhutan itself is the dream, plan a proper multi-day trip with permits. But as an afternoon of momos, prayer flags and a new country in your passport-and-stories folder? It is a very good day.
