Chilapata vs Jaldapara: Which Should You Choose?

21 August 20267 min readBy Chilapata Eco Hut

They sit 25 minutes apart, but they offer two different forests. Here is an honest comparison — and why the smart answer is often both.

Two forests, two moods

Jaldapara National Park is the famous one — open riverine grassland and the best place in India after Kaziranga to see one-horned rhinos. Chilapata is its quieter neighbour: dense sal forest on the elephant corridor, with ancient fort ruins and barely any crowds.

Neither is ‘better’. They are different experiences, and they happen to be a 25-minute drive apart.

Wildlife: rhinos vs elephants

If a rhino is on your bucket list, Jaldapara is the answer — the morning jeep safari from Madarihat has the highest chance, and elephant safaris at Hollong run when permits allow. Chilapata rarely gives you a rhino but is excellent for elephants, bison, hornbills and the general pleasure of a deep, green forest.

Birdwatchers: both are great, but Chilapata’s dense canopy gives you woodpeckers, barbets, minivets and hornbills, while Jaldapara’s grasslands give you pipits, larks, partridges and winter migratory waterbirds.

Crowds and cost

Jaldapara safaris sell out on long weekends and holidays, especially the morning slots. Chilapata is calmer even in peak season. Cost follows the same pattern: a Chilapata jeep typically runs a bit cheaper than Jaldapara’s, and last-minute availability is better.

  • Jaldapara: rhinos, grasslands, bookable elephant safari, busier
  • Chilapata: elephants, dense forest, fort ruins, quieter, slightly cheaper

Where to stay for either

Chilapata village sits almost exactly between the two, which is why we built here. From Chilapata Eco Hut, the Chilapata safari gate is minutes away and Madarihat (Jaldapara) is a 25–30 minute drive. Staying in the middle lets you do a safari from each forest on consecutive mornings without repacking.

The common advice — stay at Madarihat for Jaldapara, Madarihat for Chilapata — assumes you will only visit one forest. If you are coming all the way to the Dooars, see both.

Our suggested split

On a 2-night stay: Day 1 afternoon at Chilapata (light is lovely and jeeps are available), Day 2 early morning at Jaldapara for rhinos, then Jayanti or Bhutan Gate in the afternoon. On a 3-night stay add Buxa Fort or a full slow day at the riverside.

Common questions

Which has better chances of seeing a rhino?

Jaldapara, clearly — it holds one of India’s largest rhino populations. Chilapata is better for elephants and quiet forest drives.

Can I do both safaris in one day?

Technically yes (morning Jaldapara, afternoon Chilapata), but permits and travel make it rushed. Two mornings across two days is far more enjoyable.
