Fog on the river, a bonfire at midnight, birds before breakfast — and jeeps that sell out if you wait. How to plan a winter-holiday stay that does not disappoint.
Why the holidays belong here
Late December is Dooars at full power: 20°C days for sightseeing, 9°C nights for bonfires, dry riverbanks for long walks and the year’s most reliable safari sightings. When cities are wrapped in winter gloom, the forest here is crisp, bright and loud with birds.
Our New Year evenings look like this: dinner by 9, bonfire after, everyone outside by midnight because the sky insists on it. Last year’s guests counted six shooting stars before the countdown.
The catch: everyone has the same idea
Christmas week through New Year is the busiest fortnight in the Dooars. Safari permits for 25 Dec–2 Jan fill days ahead, Madarihat’s morning slots go first, and roads to Jaldapara see tourist-car queues on the 25th and the 31st.
The fix is boring and effective: book rooms and safaris 3–4 weeks ahead, and plan your Jaldapara safari for the 28th, not the 31st.
- Book the hut first, safaris second, sightseeing car third
- Carry ID originals for every traveller (permits!)
- Pre-order the Christmas/New Year special dinner — the kitchen plans portions
A sample holiday stay
Day 1: arrive Hasimara by noon, riverside sunset, bonfire. Day 2: Chilapata safari at dawn, big breakfast, village walk, Christmas or New Year special dinner. Day 3: Jaldapara morning safari for rhinos, tea-garden drive, late checkout and station drop.
Add a day if you can — the 1st of January, after the weekenders leave, is the quietest, clearest day of the whole season.
What to pack for winter Dooars
Layers: a jacket that blocks wind for open-jeep mornings, a cap and gloves for the 6 am gate, thick socks (hut floors are cool at dawn). Moisturiser and lip balm — the air is drier than Kolkata expects. And a torch; we provide one, but birders like their own.

Do you have a special dinner on New Year?
Yes — a set festive menu (veg and non-veg) with the bonfire running long. It is included in holiday stays; tell us your headcount at booking.
