Birdwatching in Chilapata: Species, Spots & Season

19 June 20267 min readBy Chilapata Eco Hut

Guests have listed over 70 species without leaving our garden. A working birder’s guide to the Dooars’ most underrated birding base.

Why Chilapata is a birder’s quiet secret

Chilapata sits on the forest corridor between Jaldapara and Buxa — the same connectivity that moves elephants moves birds. You get sal-forest specialists, grassland birds from Jaldapara’s side, riverine species along the Bania, and winter visitors from the Himalaya, all within a few kilometres.

The honest highlight: you do not even need the safari. Most of our guests’ lists are built from the veranda, the village paths and the riverbank.

Birds you are likely to meet

A typical three-day list looks like this:

  • Everyday stars: purple sunbird, red-vented bulbul, oriental magpie-robin, Indian robin, coppersmith barbet
  • Forest canopy: great hornbill & oriental pied hornbill, minivets, woodpeckers, drongos, verditer flycatcher
  • Grasslands & fields: pipits, larks, bay-backed shrike, peafowl everywhere
  • Riverside: white-throated kingfisher, common & pied kingfishers, wagtails, sandpipers in winter
  • Winter visitors (Nov–Feb): migratory ducks and waders at Jaldapara’s water bodies, thrushes and warblers in the undergrowth

Best time and rhythm

Birding is best November to March: resident species are active, migrants are in, and the light is soft. April–May rewards early risers with breeding activity and cuckoos; the monsoon brings butterflies and amphibians more than birds.

Daily rhythm: 6:00–9:00 am is the golden window. A second, shorter pulse happens 4:00–5:30 pm. Midday is for tea and checklists.

How we support birding stays

We keep a property checklist at the dining table — add your sightings. For serious trips we can arrange a local birding guide (₹800–1,200 per morning) who knows current calling spots, and early bed tea so you are out before the sun. The Forest View Double faces the tree line directly; keep your binoculars on the window sill.

  • Bring: 8×42 binoculars, dull-coloured clothing, a light jacket for misty mornings
  • Skip: playback calls and flash — both stress the birds and spoil it for others
